Hippie haunt and bohemian playground, West End’s reputation precedes it in many areas (the markets, the nightlife), but it’s this suburb’s bustling café scene that keeps the streets busy on the weekend. Sifting through West End’s many cafes — some of which may be serving up so-so fare you’re dead tired of seeing on your breakfast plate (Poached eggs on toast. No way.) — is a task that would take you a whole year of weekends, and ain’t nobody got time for that. We’ve collated this handy list of our favourite West End breakfasts.
Locavore mecca, Plenty, is a very welcome addition to the West End breakfast scene, serving up a new breakfast menu each week [Editor’s Tip: They post a new menu on their Facebook page each Thursday. Get on it.]. The menu is totally seasonal and sourced from local ingredients, and features such combinations as French toast with fresh figs, raspberries and meringue fool; strawberry and coconut bread with mascarpone; and cheesy onion toast with ham hock and eggs. Mmm, cheesy toast. Nuf said.
While you might know them for their Bloody Marys and Sunday drinks sessions, but West End stalwart Lock’n’Load also have an all-day menu ‘loaded’ with yummy breakfast options. The baked eggs with drunken beans comes with mozzarella and chorizo (yesss), the green eggs and ham comes with toasted brioche, crisped pancetta, and green tomato jam, and the potato and ham-hock pancakes come with crème fraiche and green onion pesto. Delish? We think so!
The Burrow is a hipster-fave in West End, and their quirky menu is worth checking out. There’s the three flavours of Wookie waffles (the Ham Solo has bacon and maple syrup, the Darth Mulberry sweet ricotta, mulberry compote and dark chocolate sauce, and the Jaffa the Hut, a sweet mess of marmalade, dark choc’ fudge and sweet ricotta), the ‘John and Yoko’s breakfast in bed’ (a nostalgic serve of soft boiled egg with toast soldiers, a Danish, and granola and fruit), and a sweet-sushi Kawaii bento box, where fresh fruit and coconut sit atop a sweet rice pudding.
Warehouse space turned Brisbane’s hippest new bar and restaurant offering, Depo, has a reassuringly simple breakfast menu (though it’s still ‘fancy’ enough to warrant a cash transaction). Tempt yourself with banana bread and honeycomb butter; toasted quinoa granola; a melon salad with grapes, berries, and Barambah yoghurt; and wholemeal pancakes with smoked salmon, lemon and dill yoghurt, and a poached egg.
Sol Breads has amassed a loyal West End breakfast following, and with a focus on vegetarian and vegan fare, this little café slash bakery is great for your waistline and your tastebuds. Because they are a bakery first and foremost, the breakfast fare has a carb focus that we appreciate. Our pick is the cinnamon and honey ricotta on sourdough with fresh fruit, but you can’t go past the classics: croissants, chunky fruit toasts, frittatas and muffins.
Five Sisters Art House Café
The Five Sisters’ menu is a hit list of breakfast classics: Eggs benedict, a stunning bircher with fresh fruit, avo’ on toast with lemony goodness, and a mean big breakfast (perfect for the day after the night before). This family-run café has the kind of welcoming vibe that’s made for sipping hot chocolates on cooler autumn mornings. (And it doesn’t hurt that they do an incredibly good selection of baked goodies. Hello, baklava.)
We are freaking over this West End organic institution’s breakfast menu. Mondo Organics have a jaw-droppingly good new autumn menu, where the decadent seasonal delights are virtually impossible to choose between. Don’t believe us? How does brioche, homemade Nutella, caramelised banana, and vanilla ice cream sound? Yeah, that’s right, we said HOMEMADE NUTELLA. Or, for the savoury inclined, there are sweet potato hash cakes with beetroot relish and labna. The sourdough spelt crumpets, rapadura golden syrup, poached autumn fruit and whipped mascarpone also caught our eye.
West End Coffee House
West End Coffee House is a well-kept West End secret. Tucked off Boundary Street, it’d be easy to walk on by, but you’d be missing out on one killer Asian-inspired breakfast. Classics like avo’ on toast and breakfast burritos sit alongside Laos sticky rice fritters and a pulled-pork fried rice on this melting-pot menu. Their Thai-street food style lunch menu is also very very tasty, and reasonably priced, so stick around until lunch time.
Taking the place of Cup (thought still serving their exceptional coffee), Tazza have a spanking new breakfast menu you need to get your mouth around, asap. We’re partial to the sautéed mushrooms and poached eggs with avo’ and feta mash and asparagus! Check this West End newbie out.
