Australia has joined 92 countries in marking Green Building Week, which showcases environmentally healthy buildings and the ways they improve the lives of inhabitants.
World Green Building Week just finished and ran from September 17 – 21. Now in its third year, the event brings together green building councils representing more than 30,000 organisations around the world.
They host events, run campaigns and educate people about green projects and products, and ways they can impact their own properties and communities."World Green Building Week reminds us that sustainable building is not a fad or a fashion – it’s the future, and Australia is at the forefront of this global movement,” said Chief executive of the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), Romilly Madew.
"We have eight million square metres of Green Star-certified space around Australia, we’ve trained 40,000 people in the property and construction industry on sustainable building practices. Many Australian companies now have international reputations as sustainability specialists and we are leading the way in terms of green products and innovations."
Energy efficient homes and commercial properties are in increasing demand around Australia.
‘Green’ features include solar panelling and hot water systems, sustainable materials in construction, sustainable interior outfitting (such as bamboo flooring), efficient light and water technology and equipment, rain water collection, recycling, natural ventilation, high insulation levels, double glazed windows, energy efficient appliances, smart metering and accomodation for electric car charging.
Many of these features were on show at the 2012 HIA GreenSmart Awards, which set the benchmark in Australia for environmentally friendly building techniques and products.
